Natanel believes that effective healing happens when the Acupuncture treatment is as gentle as it is effective.

 

Bringing 17 years of clinical experience to his practice, he specializes in a constitutional approach to acupuncture.

Is a complex, chronic condition characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties. Modern medicine classifies fibromyalgia not as a disease of the joints or muscles themselves, but as a neurosensory disorder of pain processing—specifically classified as nociplastic pain.

While a single definitive cause has not been identified, research shows it develops through a combination of central nervous system alterations, genetic predispositions, and physiological triggers.

Key Physiological Mechanisms 
1. Central Sensitization

The central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) becomes hyper-reactive to sensory signals.

  • Pain Amplification: Non-painful touch or mild pressure can be registered as severe pain (allodynia).

  • Neurotransmitter Imbalance: Brain chemistry shifts toward pain amplification. 

  • Altered Connectivity:  The body's natural pain-dampening mechanisms are reduced.

2. Neuroinflammation & Glial Cell Activation

Low-grade neuroinflammation n the central nervous system, perpetuating pain sensitivity and fatigue.

3. Autonomic & HPA-Axis Dysregulation
  • The autonomic nervous system remains in a state of continuous, low-level "fight-or-flight," leading to reduced Heart Rate Variability (HRV), muscle tension, and digestive dysfunction.

  • Impaired normal cortisol rhythm, contributing to unrefreshing sleep, reduced stress tolerance, and profound fatigue.

4. Small Fiber Neuropathy

Studies demonstrate that nearly 50% of fibromyalgia patients have peripheral nerve irritation that sends constant, abnormal signals to the spinal cord, driving and sustaining central sensitization.

Known Triggers and Risk Factors

Fibromyalgia often emerges when a genetic vulnerability is exposed to a significant physiological or psychological stressor:

  • Genetics: Fibromyalgia frequently runs in biological families. Specific gene variants related to serotonin, dopamine, and catecholamine processing increase susceptibility.

  • Physical Trauma: Major physical events—such as motor vehicle accidents, neck or spinal injuries, or major surgical procedures—frequently act as the initial onset trigger.

  • Infections & Post-Viral Syndromes: Viral and bacterial infections (including Epstein-Barr Virus, Lyme disease, and post-COVID-19 syndrome) can alter immune function and trigger long-term nociplastic pain.

  • Severe Psychological or Emotional Stress: Early childhood adversity, prolonged emotional strain, or PTSD can chronically dysregulate the nervous system, predisposing individuals to central sensitization.

  • Comorbid Autoimmune & Rheumatic Diseases: Conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), Ankylosing Spondylitis, or Osteoarthritis significantly increase the risk of developing secondary fibromyalgia.

Because fibromyalgia is primarily a condition of central sensitization—where the brain and spinal cord amplify pain signals—acupuncture works by downregulating an overactive nervous system rather than just treating local muscle tissue.

By modulating neurochemical pathways, calming sympathetic fight-or-flight responses, and altering brain connectivity, acupuncture provides systemic relief across multiple fibromyalgia symptom domains.

 

1. Neurophysiological Mechanisms (Biomedical Perspective)
Downregulating Central Sensitization
  • Restoring Descending Inhibitory Control: In fibromyalgia, the brain's natural "pain gate" mechanism is impaired. Acupuncture stimulates A-delta peripheral nerve fibers, activating the Diffuse Noxious Inhibitory Control (DNIC) system in the brainstem to help mute widespread pain signaling.

  • Neurotransmitter Modulation: Needle insertion triggers the release of endogenous opioids ($\beta$-endorphins, enkephalins, and dynorphins) in the central nervous system. It also elevates serotonin and norepinephrine levels, which are characteristically depleted in fibromyalgia patients.

  • Reducing Inflammatory Cytokines: Acupuncture helps suppress pro-inflammatory signaling molecules (such as Substance P, IL-6, and TNF-$\alpha$) in blood plasma and spinal fluid, dampening microglial activation and neuroinflammation.
